Football betting explained: odds, margin and what a free bet is worth
Two bookmakers can price the same match differently, and the gap is not opinion — it is margin. Learn to read it and you will know, before placing anything, roughly how much the book is charging you for the privilege.
Decimal odds are probability in disguise
Odds of 2.00 mean the bookmaker is pricing that outcome at a 50 percent chance. The conversion is simply one divided by the odds: 2.50 implies 40 percent, 4.00 implies 25 percent, 1.25 implies 80 percent.
That single step turns a betting slip into something you can actually assess. If you think a side wins more often than the price implies, the bet has value. If you do not, no amount of confidence changes the arithmetic.
The overround: what the book charges
Add up the implied probabilities of every outcome in a market and the total will exceed 100 percent. The excess is the bookmaker's margin, usually called the overround.
Take a match priced 2.10 for the home win, 3.40 for the draw and 3.60 for the away win. That is 47.6 plus 29.4 plus 27.8, which comes to 104.8 percent. The margin is 4.8 percent — a tight, competitive book.
Now price the same three outcomes at 2.00, 3.20 and 3.30. The total climbs to 111.6 percent, a margin of 11.6 percent. Nothing about the match changed; you are simply paying more than twice as much to bet on it. Comparing that number across two sites takes thirty seconds and is the single most useful habit in betting.
A free bet is worth less than its face value
Betting bonuses do not work like casino bonuses. With most free bets the stake is not returned with the winnings, so a 10 euro free bet at odds of 3.00 pays 20 euros, not 30. In practice a free bet is worth roughly 70 to 80 percent of its stated amount.
That is not a reason to refuse one. It is a reason to compare a 10 euro free bet against a 10 euro cash bonus honestly, and to read whether the offer needs a qualifying bet first. Our guide to wagering requirements covers the same arithmetic on the casino side.
Where the odds on this site come from
The fixtures and prices on our live odds page are indicative. They show how each market is priced and how prices drift, but they are not live quotes and they differ between operators. Always confirm the real price before staking anything.

FAQ
Divide one by the odds. Odds of 2.00 imply 50 percent, 2.50 implies 40 percent, 4.00 implies 25 percent. This is the probability the bookmaker is pricing in, margin included.
On the match winner market, roughly 4 to 6 percent is competitive and anything above 10 percent is expensive. Add the implied probabilities of home, draw and away; the amount by which the total exceeds 100 percent is the margin.
No. With most free bets the stake is not returned with your winnings, so a 10 euro free bet at odds of 3.00 pays 20 euros rather than 30. Treat a free bet as worth about 70 to 80 percent of its face value.
